Crank start

Stopped by Bates in Burbon Indiana and picked up a hand crank for my 1948 C (65.00) Starter works fine but tempted to give it a shot. Anything I should know before I do. Checked on a grill also but when he said 450.00 I decided I could do with out it for now. Any ideas where I can pick one up for a more reasonable price?
Thanks

Be careful when hand cranking a tractor, always stand as far away from the crank as you can in case the engine "kicks back" and throws the crank backwards. Search the archives, there have been a lot of discussions on how to safely hand crank a tractor. I've got a grille from a Super A, needs a little work though, would it fit a C??

Andy.

Well as far as hand cranking one NEVER EVER wrap your whole hand around the crank handle. Keep you thumb next to your hand so if it kicks back it will knock your hand back and even then it can/will brake your arm just less likely if you hold it right. BTDT and went to the hospital because of a kick back

Check the timing and make sure it fires at TDC or a degree or two after, never before. Turn it over one compression at a time. Don't ever spin it.

I am reasonably sure I have a C nose piece (grill). Will check tomorrow. I live in SE Montana, so freight might be a factor. Will post again tomorrow.

Im near 61, and have farmed since 68 on my own. Ive always had crank tractors, F-20s. F-30s, and my grandads CC Case. Ive never broken anything. When I was young, I spun her around like a top, F-30s too, I always had a good mag that I made sure was good by takeing it in to be checked before I ever used it, and then useing it often enough for it to stay that way. Now, tho, I start at 3 and shove down to 6, and that gets her done on my CC. I grab my hand around it to get alla the grip I can and always have, You have a good mag thats in good shape, and the tractor runs great, you wont have any problems,

The hood (grill) I have matches the hood on my C, so reasonably certain it is correct. There is a crease, not sharp, above the grill and the area below the grill has several dents. The mounting bolt hole is wallowed out some, and one grill bar has a significant bend in it. The grill has been pushed in some, but the screens behind it are intact. It has the usual surface rust, but all in all it is definitely restorable. The computer we use to send pictures is down or I would Email you one. However, if you are interested and we can agree on a price--when you receive it and you are not satisfied, I will refund your money. I checked the Email box so let me know if you are interested.

Thanks Dr.Bert I have one that I found today that was really in pretty good shape. It needs a few of the fins pulled out but other then that it's good. Thanks again
