Farmall H cam bearing size

Anyone ever run into this?
I"m rebuilding my early Farmall H engine and was about ready to pull and replace the three cam bearings with the new ones form the kit. I had some pullers machined to fit the new ones but discovered that they are about 0.005" larger than the originals. The cam measures right to the values in the book and fits to old bearings to tolerance. If I just slide the kit bearings onto the cam I get a very sloppy fit. I can"t find any reference to different sized cam bearings for this engine.

I would take the block to your local auto machine shop and have them install the cam bearings. I think yours are too big. Your shop can get the correct size. Hal

Nope, this is right out of the box. I've got a puller to remove the old and pull in the new - just don't want to put in the wrong ones!

I have an OTC cam bearing installer, which has expanding mandrels. If you expand the mandrel too snug into the cam bearing, then pull it into place, it will be JAMMED onto the mandrel.

So, you install the bearing with the expanding mandrel slightly LOOSE inside the bearing.

In other words, the bearings DO get squished a bit when installed.

TRUST, BUT VERIFY!

In other words, BE SURE to check the bearings after installation!

The .005" sounds about right. The bearings are a press fit in the block so you need to machine the drivers to the size of the cam journals, not the uninstalled bearing ID.

The bearings will squeeze down in size when they are pressed in the block. The will then have to be honed/reamed to the proper oil clearance.
