Cub PTO pulling out the back of tractor

We went trough the rear end of our mid 50's cub replacing oil seals and brakes, and now the PTO is trying to pull out the back of the tractor when engaged. I can just tap it back in and it runs until it slides back out. What keeps it in? Is it supposed to be a tight press fit in the bearing and is that all that is supposed to hold it?

If so, do you think if I coated it with loc-tite it might hold?, or maybe the bearing would still get too warm and the loc-tite would let loose..

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

There should be a thrust bearing that keeps the gears meshed properly. if it's coming out, I'd guess a problem thrust bearing.

Do you have a parts manual or an IT manual?? The parts manual shows two snap rings on the pto bearing. There is a small one and a larger one. Looks like one goes on the shaft, and the other in the housing. I suspect you are missing one of them.

There were 2 versions of the pto/shaft bearing. later ones had a snap ring on the shaft to keep the shaft form sliding out through the bearing. earlier ones had the shaft staked ( center punched ) to raise high spots to keep it form slipping out.
