I bought this M almost 3 months ago, you guys told me to look right under number one plug for the serial number. I looked over the entire tractor and couldnt find it. Well today I was remounting the alt, coil, and ballast resistor, to eliminate a lot of baling wire, duct tape and twine to make things look a little better and what the heck, right under number 1 is the serial number, just where it is supposed to be.
I guess its a 1950 not a 51 as I was told by the seller, doesnt much matter to me. Can you tell me what the rest of the letters and numbers mean, also what about horsepower. Last nite when this site was down I was checking ebay, tractor House etc, and every other M listed had a different horsepower listed. Ill list all the numbers I found on my M , thanks a lot.

FBKM is the prefix IH used for farmall M engines. X1 is the suffix used when the engine was equiped to burn gasoline fuel only. 6722 DJ is the engine block casting #. Don't know what the 4 is. 3 = month, 29 = day of month, T = year 1950. By my figuring if your engine # is 216027 X1 the tractor serial # would be 226027 X1.
Only way to know what your tractor horsepower is for sure is to test. Most M engines have some kind of power improvment added by now. In good tune most are making at least 40 to 45 belt horsepower and 30 to 35 drawbar. Others are on up.

The Farmall M from the factory is rated at 36 horsepower on the belt or at the PTO. The 4 inch over bore engine kit adds about 10 horsepower, and just about ALL Ms have the 4 inch kit, so the majority of Farmall Ms now will have right at 46 horsepower.
