water jacket cover

pulled the water jacket cover off of the 44 H yesterday and it is pretty rusted along the back. I figured 64 years it ought to look pretty bad. as long as I clean up the loose rust, is it ok to use still. The outside is in really good shape. If I should not, is there place for new one?

Go ahead and clean it up, but then inspect it real good to make sure it has not rusted completely through. Aftermarket replacements are readily available.

It may have a baffle with holes in it to direct coolant. If it does not, look for a place it might have been. They are important, and I would replace the cover if it is rusted off. JimN

I am in the process of replacing my water jacket cover. The one that was on there does not have the baffles, and had a pin-hole leak. The new one, purchased through the parts department of this web site, does have the baffles. It looks like it has a galvanizing paint on it. I gave it anohter coat of galvanizing paint, let it dry for a couple days, and gave it a top coat with a good quality rust preventative paint. I'll be installing it tomorrow.

At $40 + paint, why take a chance on the old one?

Make sure you flush all the way around the cyclinders while you have that cover off. My W-4 (same motor) had alot of sediment behind #4 cylinder. ..Iron

That brings up a good question, how do you get that junk out from inside there. I assume it is sealed so can you just spray water in there?

Even a high pressure washer can be used to blast in there! it is messy though. Use bent #9 wire to make a hook to loosen the scale. JimN
