240U: hydraulic oil foams out breather

I’m getting hydraulic fluid foaming out of the breather on my 240 Utility. I know it’s not water contamination because I’ve drained the reservoir, and replaced the hydraulic fluid. If I catch the foamed out oil in a bucket, once it settles for 15 minutes it’s cleared up.

I rebuilt the pressure/safety relief valve, and found blockage in the internal screen/orifice, which I cleaned out. But still it foams over when I fill the reservoir. Once a certain amount of oil runs out, the foaming subsides, but then the power steering acts like it’s starved for fluid. I’m filling the reservoir to within a half inch of the fill plug, as the manual says.

I’d appreciate from anyone who has experienced anything like this.

A tiny air leak (pinhole) on the suction line from the res to the pump, or a leak at the piping manifold "O"rings (either end) will allow foaming to happen. If there is no leak visible, It may take some pressure in the Suction line to find it, Good luck. JimN

Jim---does the 240 have a screen filter similar to the 450??? Our 450 would create foam when the screen got plugged---don't know if it was the equivalent to an air leak in the intake line or not. Would pay to take a look maybe.

Thanks for the replies. I bought the tractor last year, and the moment I topped off the reservoir foamed oil began pouring out of the breather. I cleaned out the main filter screen and then drained the oil and replaced it with NAPA's universal hydraulic oil. Same thing. Rebuilt the control valve, which has a orifice with attached (internal) screen. I found the orifice was clogged, and cleaned it out.

I had also replaced the orings on the double tube manifold that runs between the pump and the control valves.

Are you referring to the screen accessible from the outside? I'll check that again . . . maybe something got stirred up, but it was clean when I first checked it before rebuilding everything.

Jim

I'll pull that manifold and check the orings . . . they were new but perhaps some dirt got in there. I know there's a rubber hose between the two metal flanges . . . don't see any leakage but could air be getting in that way?

The system is sucking air on the suction side of the pump somewhere ?

They will suck air on the suction side and not leak much if any at the same place they are sucking air. Much easier to suck air than hydro oil.
