Farmall A Hydraulics

We have a Farmall A, I believe it"s a 39". It has electric start, but no hydraulics. A local man is selling his Super A w/ a cracked block for short money. Can I put the hydraulics on mine? I don"t want to use his tractor, mines a lot nicer all around.

What do you plan to use the hyds for?? If your going to use them for light stuff you can mount a power steering pump so as to be driven by the fan belt and have fair hyds. BTDT on a B so as to be able to lift a belly mount sickle mower I built form junk mowers. I used it that way for year to mow my hay till I found a MOCO that I could afford

As Teddy indicates, you will need to determine if there is a cover plate for the pump on your block. If not, it will not work. Look at them both. JimN

The super A block has provisions for a hydraulic pump where a Farmall A block does not. If you look below the magneto or distributor you will see a place on a Super A block that has a mounting location for the pump that you will not see on an A block.

In other words unless your A has a Newer model engine in it, then you are not going to be able to use the hydraulic pump from a Super A.

And even if your tractor does has the super A equivalent engine, I would doubt that you would have the correct clutch housing to use the rest of the Super A hydraulics, So you would have to make your own reservoir and control system, which isn't all that much trouble but you are in for a lot of work and money buying valves and cylinders.

IH560: Your quite right, lot more to this than having an engine drilled for the hydraulic pump. The torque tube from the SA must be used as well. Basically he's looking at using all cast from the SA, forward of the transmission.

ols A: Look both tractors over closely. Super A torque tube is flat on top under the touch control unit. Then as the others mentioned unless the engine is drilled for a hydraulic pump, you will need the SA block. About the only way your A engine would have provission for the pump is if the block were 1947 or later. Block part numbers 2510869 R1 or 354898 R1 from SA, C or SC are drilled, 6342DH is not, that being the block used in all A or B tractoers.

You them over an compare, you'll soon see what I'm talking about.
