91 Cad with Vinyl top stained badly. Anyone ever use paint or some type of dressing to recoat or recolor. Willing to take a chance since I can always buy another top, but car is not likely worth it(600). Worth keeping though even when ugly. After 14 years hate to junk her. Thanks.

is it a hardtop car with a rag?

Is it a convertible?

Is it black?

IF it is black and a hardtop, buy some black RIT fabric dye and go to town. wear gloves!

Otherwise, if it is a vinyl (fake leather) looking hardtop with a rag, then try some Dupont vinyl dye. you will have to have a prof paint gun to shoot it, but it should last a little while.

Good Luck!

I just cleaned up some pretty nasty vinyl seats on some bikes and a moped that had been setting outside for several years and they look new.
Clean it with something like 409 or fantastic (I made an old Buick from a brushpile look like new inside and out with fantastic bathroom cleaner) until the rag is clean and let it dry (park in the shade).
I used F21 from Turtle Wax (not picky about one brand or the other, just what was available at the time). Mist it on, spread it out real good, and wait a few minutes (I waited about 20 cause I got side tracked) and go to it with something like a Tshirt. If it's not shiney enough, mist it and wait again. If your top's not damaged, it should look like new. It'll do a showroom job on the interior and weather stripping too without a whole lot of work. I even brought a weathered fiberglass horse trailer back to life with the stuff.

Good Luck,

Dave

There are now paints for vinyl that do very well. I got mine at Ace Hdware. I am positive that you could use it on a top because I used it on a vinyl tarp and it is still good two years NUff said Henry

I've seen vinyl dye/paint featured on several classic car repair shows. Check out dupli-color. They've used it on dashboards and interior panels, so I don't know if it will hold up to weather.

Something no one else mentioned, I used lacquer thinner to clean. Don't saturate, and wipe it off promptly. I just wet the cloth and wipe it clean. Takes everything off and ready to paint. I have actually misted regular black spray paint on plastic or vinyl tops, seats, etc in a pinch. Some of the vinyl paint is just a lacquer based paint if I recall correctly.

And put a good coat of wax where it might run off onto painted areas.
I have seen several cars the vinyl has been removed from. Wouldn't have known except I saw them part way through the process.
