140 Fuel Problem?

My 140 has been sitting idle for a long time. We can get it to run but only when it"s fully choked. The slightest opening of the choke causes it to stall. As throttle speed is increased, while choked, it eventually starts to falter as if it"s starved for gas. There is good fuel flow out the drain on the bottom of the carburetor. We"ve had the carb apart and cleaned it thoroughly. Could something be wrong inside the carburetor that prevents it from running without the choke on?

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while someone makes an attempt to start the engine. Should have good suction on your hand.

Make sure the carburetor and intake manifold are snug. Don't over tighten. I would pull the sparkplugs and squirt some engine oil or ATF into the cylinders and spin it over. Rings may be stuck. Good time to check the compression while the plugs are out. Hal

Sounds like something in the carb is plugged. Look real close at all the passages in it and run some small fine wire through them.

rowtohoe: I think you are the guy who suggested he had an inline filter between sediment bowl and carb. Take that off and heave it. I told you two days ago, get the proper sediment bowl screen. It worked well for 50+ years.
