Finally finished the conversion and all seems well thanks to Jnicholson good info and Bob M for sending me the wiring chart. Thank you both.
I do have one question. The tractor starts really FAST now! I mean it spins REALLY FAST! The battery I got from Advance Auto Parts is 675 CCA and fits in the battery box. Could it damage the ring teeth on the flywheel from engaging so hard? My Ford 8N is converted to 12 volt and doesn't spin this hard. Thanks Bob

Bob - The OEM starter drive and ring gear on my Super M (my first ever 12 volt alternator conversion) are still going strong after hundreds (thousands?) of starts over the past 20+ years. So my quick answer is to not to be too concerned about it.

If it worries you however you can ease bendix and ring gear engagement a little by switching to smaller, automotive type AWG #2 battery cables. The higher resistance of the small cables slows the starter a bit which in turn "softens" bendix engagement somewhat. ...Bob M

Bob, Thank you very much for all your help. Your wiring diagram was great and easy to follow. I just touch the starter and it is going now. It probably spins 5 revolutions in just that one second. I may try the cable you recommended. Thanks again. Bob

I switched my BN to 12v last year .. works pretty well... not worried about originality....I picked up a generator for for someday I get to it...
Bobs diagrams really helped...

As Bob indicates, no issue on the starter being tweaked. I'm glad it is making you grin. Thanks for letting us know. The hardest part of contributing is never finding out the outcomes of remote advice! JimN

Problems arise usually when tractors aren't kept in good tune--repair. Individuals think that fast cranking speed will make up for points & condensers that need replaced--or other engine problems that should be fixed when they need attention. As long as the engine starts in 3 or 4 turns, the ring gear will last a long time.

Thanks everybody for your imput. I just touch the starter now and it is running. I kept the generator etc if I ever want to put it back to origional. I'm very pleased and appreciate your help. Bob
