656 fuel filter question

I bought a I-656 Diesel Hydro (no service history) and I'm getting ready to stock up on all the filters I'll need (fuel, oil, hyd).

I got confused when I looked up fuel filter replacements. It seems on both the FRAM and WIX web sites, when I cross check the IH part numbers 304101r91 and 306353r91 they have the same replacement part. Both numbers crossed over to FRAM C1163PL and to WIX 33080. Is this right that both the primary and final fuel filter are really the same?

Evan, I don't have an answer about your filter, but go up a few questions and check out Bobby Hinson and the 2656 IH Ind. question about the top link. Maybe you can ans. this one or know someone who can. Also the 2656 and the 656 are the same tractor except the 2656 is an industrial tractor. Thanks BH

Originally the primary filter was a yarn filter with wax coating to prevent moisture and larger particles from getting into the secondary filter. The secondary filter is paper and will stop the smaller particles but no water. Most people put in two paper filters. I prefer the yarn in the primary because I don't like to see water getting into the pump.

Chuck is right about the filters from Wix/NAPA.
Baldwin has the string for the primary and the paper for the secondary, F828-F and PF828.

Can you please double check that F828-F number? Baldwin's web site doesn't know it, and they don't cross 306353R91, whereas they do cross 304101R91 to PF828.

Hey Evan,

My cross reference is a few years old. Maybe has been discontinued, don't know.
What I do know is that I have bought both of these filters from Shoup but their fall 08 catalog no longer lists either one of them.
Sorry I can't be more help.
Maybe go to CIH and get the original. Like the other poster I like the string primary best. Main reason I used Baldwin instead of NAPA.
