Air cleaner water?

The Ball jar attached to the air cleaner... is it supposed to, or is it optional, to fill it with water (halfway?)?

Saw on a post a watere filled one and it got me thinking about the oil bath filter on my old Dodge..

No, but it reminded me of my grandfather"s old Fordson which had a water bath in the air filter instead of an oil bath as I recall.

It does work, the posting below of the road runner on the M tire shows it happening. Dust that hits the water would stick to it and sink to the bottom. It also does this inside the real oil bath unit (but more effectively!) So should you do it? No. Cam you do it? Yes. Just one more thing to remember to drain before frost! (maybe a Yellow Submarine floating in it would be cute! JimN

I saw the other post too,Not too likely to happen, But, I keep
wondering what would happen if he hit a nasty bump and
swallowed a half cup water into the cylinders? Tolerances aren't
that close in those old girls, but I bet she would talk kinda funny
for a little bit.

Some of the real old 10-20s and 15-30s used a water bath air cleaner. They were big goofy looking things. Never seen one with out the bottom rotted out.

Belly,
That jar is only a pre-cleaner the water has to go a long way to get to the engine. On hot days tractor pulling we used a water alcohol mix in oil bath to cool the air charge.

Nothing should be in the precleaner jar (except maby a small JD model tractor). Put oil in the aircleaner base to level line indicated. No water anywhere.

I'm the one who posted the water in jar; I'm a total newb at this tractor stuff, but have done 1/4 mile and off-racing a bit in the past. It was expained to me that glass jars were used with water; metal containers wouldn't use water since they would rust. Before the water advice, I ran the jar dry and it collected dust; but it collects a lot more with water in the jar, especially during high wind storms when white hair sticking out underneath a ball cap has turned pink.

The water in jar advice was given to me by a couple of old timers. We get a fine caliche clay dust, that when dry is as hard as cement, but when lots of rain wet, 4x4 time.

This first pic is after clearing off about 10 acres with a bush hog; the water looked like Colorado River silt when parked.

Even with the water, it took a bit of scrubing to clean the bottom of the jar. Clean well-water refill. :)

I know nearly everyone has stated no, but it works fine in this part of the country. :)
