Probably irrelevant. Its lack of TA is equal to the rarity. If it is to be used, it is a detraction. JimN

If it is a factory TA delete tractor, there were fewer of them made and it may command a higher price someday as a collector tractor.

As for a work tractor, it wouldn't make any difference to me since I rarely use the TA in a tractor that big. Also, for a working tractor, no TA is worth more than a bad TA. When the TA went bad in our 1256 it worked just like normal in high range, but when the TA went bad in our 1086 it was unusable in low or high - caused the tractor to jump when letting the clutch out!

FWIW the 1256 made 6500 hours on the factory TA and the 1086 made 8000 hours on the factory TA. Both went out due to improper use, and I still haven't managed to teach Dad how to use it properly.

Can you elaborate on proper TA use? From what I've read in the manual and seen in practice, not many ways to break these if you just use common sense? Maybe I'm missing something?

It should take one second or less to shift it. Do NOT shift it slowly or ease it forward or back. If you ease it back and forth, things are slipping and being worn/destroyed. This applies for the old mechanical TA as well as the newer ones (706 and up/newer).

It may feel like abuse, but a quick snap either way is best.

IH TA is not much different from a Deere Quad Range, but the Deere cannot be eased or shifted slowly by design - that's why those hold up better.

Also, the 88 series IH tractors had the electro-hydraulic shifted TA and had far fewer troubles.

This is my experience and knowledge from talking with old mechanics, etc.

Shift it fast and smooth. Also follow shop manual adjustments to the "inth degree". These two should lead your TA a long life.
