TA in Three gears

The TA on my SMTA works great in 1st, second and third gears, but gone in fourth and fifth.
Is this an adjustment issue?

Doubt that I will ever use ta in fourth and fifth though.

I do use the fifth gear TA back for starting out for road gear on the 966 though as it just doesn't want to launch in fifth. The SMTA just PULLS out in fifth gear.

I'd never been on an M or Super M before. They are awesome! I removed the non-working CHarlyn, and I think my next project will be getting that back on there. The SMTA is much tougher to manuever than the Super H.

Try adjusting every thing by the book. I would suspect the TA is slipping and will work in the lower gears, until you put a load on it.

TA is shot. Our SMTA would move in 1st gear only with the TA pulled, hit the brakes and it would stop.

Requires a double split to replace the TA gearset.

I adjusted by the book and it was worse, very slow to catch. So then just shortened up the TA rod and it came back. The adjustable clevis on the clutch shaft is all the way down to it's shortest possible position. What causes that?

Worn TA clutch (probably from some one using it by slowly putting it in and out of TA. Splits ville as they say, It may not need anything but a clutch and seals!! JimN

Thanks. I sure wish I would have known this BEFORE I did the restoration. I just drove it around the yard after I got it home and the TA worked.

I'm not going to use it for heavy field work, some mowing and raking hay. And it's agaist my religion to plow , so I guess it will just be mostly a trailer queen, with an "iffy" TA.

Some stormy night in the winter it will strike you to replace it. Then it will be the best of all possible tractors (of that model you own). JimN
