Tricycle wobble

Well the SMTA is 99% finished. Couple of minor touchup items. And waiting for the hood to cure to color sand and buff that.

Took it out for a road test. Pretty bad wobble in the front tricycle. Got her home and drove up on the boards and checked radial and lateral runout. Found about 3/8 inch both lateral and and radial on both wheels. Is this too much? Just hoping I can true the tires and shim out the lateral.

Also A little TA problem, I'll get to that next.

And BTW Hytran is now 9 dollars a gallon. Sure glad I only needed 15 gallons:)

I don't know for sure Gordo but it makes sense that a total run out differential of 3/4" will cause the tires to wobble if the run out of one gets to be opposite the other. Otherwise all it would do is bounce at speed when the run out is on the same side ( both high sides up or down ), assuming you are talking about a narrow front here. But if the run out is combined with unequal tire inflation you'll compound the problem. The lateral run out doesn't help either as the weight of the tire swinging from side to side will help whip the steering wheel from side to side. Once you get the tires trued up and round and it still wobbles - all bets are off:) . It's a u-joint or gear problem then. ...randy

Hey Gordo got a Super M that wobels to.Been told any thing from bad u joints to loose bearing in the bolster .At that age shes a little loose all the way round have not pin pointed the problem yet, but can tll you what will help a guy told me to let one of the front tires down a few pounds .Keep the other one hard does not fix it but makes it driveable.I put wheel wieghts on the front for pulling made it 5 times worse .If you figuer it out let me know you should get your letter any time now .TIM

New bearings and gears helped a lot on my M but the best advice I got was to run the tires at different pressures. Works pretty good even wide open 5th gear on HIghway. NUff said Henry

SHimmed out the lateral runout. Then checked the top castellated nut on the vertical steering shaft. It was just finger tight. I put the 3/4 drive bar on there and snugged it down. Went out and did 17.5 mph (GPS) and it tracked like a new machine.
Tim, got the letter, bolt leaving via USPS Monday .
