IH 300 Utility 6 volt alternator wiring questions

I'm working on my wife's grandfathers 300u. i gave it the tune-up that i think it never had. i also had the starter and alternator rebuilt. it runs better now but I'm taking it further.

I purchased new gauges and i want to redo all the wiring because its basically a mess.

little history:

he purchased the tractor used and used it on the farm heavy until he retired. it was switched over to an alternator prior to him owning it. he claimed that it killed the battery if it wasn't disconnected all the time and it started hard all the time.

so what i'm asking, is can i use farmallbobs 12 volt diagrams with the 6 volt system that i'm running.

also i'm having problems with it still starting hard, even after the tune-up and rebuilt starter.

And after i got the rebuilt alternator installed it doesn't like to shut off with the key

PS i just joined but have been lurking for a few months

also we also have Super C and a 784 that is also part of the family

Bob M diagrams are the ones to choose.
You will need a diode placed in the line from the #1 terminal to the power source. The diode will have its band end facing the alternator if Negative ground. and toward the voltage source if positive ground.
I believe your battery cables may be too small. O gauge wire (with strands of copper adding up to the size of a first grade pencil) will help dramatically. JimN
Bob Ms marvelous diagrams

so diode will help from killing the battery while its sitting.

as far as battery cables i just picked up a set of car ones from autozone. i have no idea on the gauge of wiring of them

thanks for the info

The diode does that, (assuming the #1 terminal is connected to the ignition switch, and it is coil/distributor ignition)
If it is connected to the battery, the diode will do no good. Put a switch in that wire, and turn it on when running the tractor. (A oil pressure, closed when pressure is present, switch can be used to automate that process. Those cables are too small, they need twice as much copper in them. JimN
