I had a guy tell me that all Farmall's suchas the H's and M's came with fenders originally. Then farmers took them off as to ease in adjusting rear tire widths. Doesn't sound right. I can adjust my rear tires without having to remove fenders (if I had them). An old photoof my grandfather's 44 H did not show any fenders. The photo was taken in '47. Anybody heard of this story? Thanks. Oh, after 2 years, I have my daughter's '44 H running and getting ready to install the newly painted sheet metal on it. She is 2 1/2 and she knows that is her tractor. All lot of help from you folks and YT. Many thanks!!!

I am 66 and 1/2 and in the area I live there was an IH dealer, so about 75% were IH I never saw an H,M, or C with fenders until people started restoring them. That also goes for 200,230.300.350,400, and 450"s. All the A"s and B"s had fenders.

It has always been my understanding that all tractors sold in the state of Michigan, had to have fenders. Live near the Ohio bourder and had seen tractors (50 years ago) without fenders in Ohio. Dad took off fenders to put the culivators on, (pre fender extentions). Put then back on when culivator was removed.

Andy: 3 reasons for fender removal, some of the first front end loaders, some cultivator equipment, and mounted corn pickers.

Then some farmers took them off for ease of getting on and off tractor. Fenders caused more than their share of injuries.

They did not all come with fenders that guy was spinning yarn from a bar or pool hall. Smoe like in the state of Wisc had laws about fenders.

No. The fenders were an extra cost option. I grew up on and around those letter series Farmalls, and I never saw a set of fenders on any of them untill I started attending the various old iron shows just a few years ago.

I believe that all these imported or built in the UK had them as standard. I have never seen a WORKING M or H without fenders. MTF

Andy: My dad's H came without fenders, if I remember correctly something would have had to be modified for 31 loader to bolt to axle housings. Our 300 came without fenders. I had a used SM without fenders. Our 560 came without fenders. Basically 3 new tractors, one used tractor and no fenders.

When I was a youth, I was around the dealer quite often, never saw a Farmall with fenders. As Rusty states fenders were optional, and there were enough old Scotsmen in our area, no use a dealer flogging something not necessary in the performance of the tractor.

I have the dealer order form for ordering an H; prices effective Dec 15, 1949.

Fenders were an option.

Fenders, Rear Wheel, 51499DA
Cost: List Price $15.75 per pair
Net Price $12.60

I had never seen a tractor with fenders until the 70's when the IH dealer brought out a golden demonstrator for us to use while they were getting our 706 ready for us. It had an AM-FM radio mounted on the right fender like you all have probably seen. The shocking part was we had never had anything with FM before. My first time listening to FM anyway, the rest of the time I had always listened to WLS 890 on AM out of Chicago.

Andy, I guess most of the farmers here in the southern part of the U.S. were just too cheap to buy a new H or M with optional fenders because I never saw a set until I traveled up into MO, IA, and IL. While fenders offer a measure of safety, they would be in the way when mounting the tractor from the front side of the rear axle. I remember when plowing small cotton and soybeans (in days before herbicides) we would often have to dismount to clean out 4 row cultivators on the two M's we used. It was quicker to step straight down to cultivator from front of axle (would have been a pain with fenders). Rember cultivators would plug up with vines and grass especially when using the cultivator "fenders" which allowed a faster cutivating speed and helped keep from covering up the small cotton and soybean plants.
Just what I remember from the fuzzy past. Joe P.

My H had fenders when i bought it. Most H & M tractors I have seen around here have fenders.

Mike,
That is very interesting, I don't believe I've ever seen a working M or H with fenders, Case(SC,RC,DC) were the only ones we had with fenders; F12&20,M, JD A,B,G.

I not only never saw fenders on Farmall or John Deere row crop never saw wide front either. Oliver and some AC row crops had fenders. One of our nieghbors was a 100% Case man and think the Cases had fenders. The Case mans Granson is still farming nearby and he is 100% Case/IH with emphasis on the Case.

The H my dad has I don't remember ever seeing fenders on it. I think as a kid I asked about it and was told they were taken off for whatever reason now the MD had fenders but what a pain for getting on from the back and couldn't tell you if theyare still around or not. prbably in the iron pile somewhere. I guess I should reserect them from whatever fate they drew and save them. might want to paint it and make a trailer queen NOT. lol Best corn drier tractor ever cheap and easy to use.

Every dealer took what Harvester Company sent to them, if there was a special order it was sent with whatever order was ready.

In the Mississippi Delta farmers wanted a bare-boned tractor. Fenders and other options were something a dealer dealth with.

(quoted from post at 10:42:51 08/17/08) I've always wanted to put a set of '06/'56 flattop fenders on my M. I always thought the dual headlights looked great.
Well I picked up a set and a ROP from a scrapper the other day. I am going to put them on my 350 to keep some of the debri from flying up from the Bush Hog.
And you are right, they do look good.

Dan: Flat tops look great on the older tractors, however you almost have to make provission for mounting and dismounting in front of rear wheel. Clutch side is best. Fast hitch and those fenders don't mix, I have a perminant scar on my shin to prove it. Fast hitch went down the road PDQ, I installed a M type drawbar. By then I had two tractors with factory 3 point.

I installed a cab on my 656 back in the late 60s. I put the flat tops from 656 on the 560. it made it convenient for running tarp each side from fender to grill. Gave great protection from wind and cold early spring and late fall.

(quoted from post at 17:14:38 08/17/08) The John Deere flat tops with the single headlight actually look pretty good on an H or M, too.

I'm in NW Ohio and about every farm that still has an M or H around working has fenders. Alot of guys have their, their dads or their grandpas old unrestored H or M and use it for hay raking and little stuff like that. More have fenders than not.
