656 bull pinion shaft wiggles

Wanted to adjust the brakes today, and discovered one of the bull pinion shafts wiggles pretty good by hand. :(

what am i in for? I'm afraid if there is a way to target just the shaft, I'll still end up dismantling the tractor, because another bearing will be shot, or i'll find the differential damaged as well.

My record of opening a can of worms is pretty consistent, adjusting the valve lash turned into replacing a couple push rods! good now, knock on wood.

thanks

You got off easy. In my case it turned into replacing the cam.

Sorry, I won't be much help to you, but I've got an issue of a related nature. The axle ends on my M were crudely torched off, and I want to replace the axles. I'm still working up the nerve to try that, so I know how you feel. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Loose bearings there are a sign of loose bearings in most of the Trans/Diff/Finals. The metal must go somewhere, and it is usually into other rollers/balls and bushings, causing premature wear there. I would repair it, new bearings will be reasonable (compared to the loss if you sold the tractor honestly with that issue known to the buyer. Best of luck, and maybe it is local to the pinion bearing. JimN
