Where"s a good place to get new Water & Oil presure gauges? Do the IH dealers still carry them? Also, where can I get a 12 volt conversion kit. I understand from a local farmer these are available and are easy to switch over.

Thanks in advance for any info you have on this.

OEM tractor partsin Chenoa, IL has them, not real cheap, but are real nice reproduction parts. OEMtractorparts.com will get you there. They do NOT ship fast, on some stuff, it is made as ordered, so be patient.

I know OEM tractor parts carries guages. I don't know how good they are.

On the 12v conversion... You'll need a 12v generator/alternator, a 12v starter and a ballast resistor for the coil.

Some folk say that a 6v starter will work on 12v for quite a while. There is risk there. I wouldn't go that route, but...

All the ballast resistor does for the coil is cut the voltage to 6v for the coil. Running a coil on straight 12v will burn it out FAST. You can get a 12v coil, but they're pricy.

I've seen a bunch of folk running GM alternators in place of generators. That's what I've got on my M. I've converted it to 1-wire operation with a special voltage regulator. I'm still not happy with it, but I've got other things going on right now.

Your ammeter won't know the difference between 12v and 6v.

Oh! and you'll need a 12v battery.

In the archives (search for box) There are hundreds of articles and how to descriptions. The process is painless. JimN

You posted "You can get a 12v coil, but they're pricy."...

Part 3 14SB... true 12-Volt coil at NAPA... $12.00 to $20.00

I'm gonna take a wild guess that you are kind of new at this. With that in mind I'm going to ask why you want to convert to 12 V? Is your current generator, starter, battery, coil, lights all missing, not working, or need rebuilt?

I have three Farmalls, live in SD and they are all 6 volt and will stay that way. For 1/3 the money of converting you can refurbish your 6 volt system. Look, you are only cranking a 4 cyl, 6:1 compression engine. Motorcucle battery will spin that!

I dont know, last conversion I did cost me 65 bucks. Last generator system I had reworked cost me 140 bucks, and it still wont charge right, so a 12 volt alt conversion is coming soon I think.

Its your tractor and your call for sure, that being said, an H ought to start, run n perform just fine at the original 6 volts PROVIDED you:
Use a good heavy duty battery (biggest n heaviest n highest rated and CCA that will physically fit in the compartment),,,,,,,,,,Use at least 0 better yet 00 gauge Battery n Starter n Ground Cables,,,,,,,Keep her well tuned (plugs, wires, points, condensor, cap n rotor)

Now if it were an M (harder to crank) perhaps I could see the conversion but that H ought to start fine even at cold temps iffffffff you do the above.

best wishes

Dan,
you need a new part supplier, O'reilly and NAPA same price for 6 or 12 volt(with built in resistor) $19.79 plus tax. Haven't ever changed a working 6 volt starter for a 12 volt one(SC,DC,Allis B, JDA&B)

6 volt system will start tractor if everything is in good condition but 12 volt is more forgiving and I have never known anyone who claims 6 volts will start it better than 12 volts.

Anyone that does not think altenator is better than the 50+ year old generators has never had to maintain generators on high hour trucks or tractors.

John, 65 bucks sounds pretty cheap for a battery, coil, alternator, new belt, light bulbs and resistor. :)

30 for the battery at Wally world, 3 for the resistor for the coil I had, 30 bucks for a junk yard alternator. Bulbs I had here, were like a buck eack at the jockey lot. Now, this was 3 years ago, the last 12 volt conversion I did.

Forgot, the belt was reused, and this was on an M.Converted several Hs the same way, just flip the bracket for the genny, some washers for the top bracket to stick out a little more and viola, cheap 12 volt conversion.
