I just purchased a 1951 Farmall Cub, and it's running 220 degrees, and it's steaming from the radiator. Why is it overheating, plugged radiator, cracked block...... Help!!!!!

Is the fan belt tight?? Is the radiator clean both inside and out side?? Is the thermostat good?? any one or all of those can cause you that problem. Also if the timing is not right it will run hot

The cub has a thermo-siphon cooling system, no themostat, no water pump. The hot water rises and enters the top of the radiator and the cooler water then exits the bottom of the radiator and enter the bottom of the engine.

The older models didn't have a pressure cap on the radiator, so if it was over filled the excess came out as the tractor warmed up. They are supposed to be filled to 2 inches below the top of the radiator.

That said, yours could be running hot or it could just be spitting out the excess water. If it is running hot it could be debris in the outside of the radiator or the fan bearing starting to seize( most people don't know it needs serviced).

Since there is no water pump the internal flow of the water can be restricted by debris inside the engine that has accumulated over the years.

There is a lot of troubleshooting info and how to procedures at the farmallcub.com site along with a lot of people very knowledge about the Cub.

The fins might be plugged full of dirt, crud, etc. Usually you can clean it out with compressed air, but sometimes a power washer is needed. The radiator could aslo be full of rust and whatever on the inside. Sometimes it can be flushed out, more often the radiator needs to make a trip to a repair shop.

not to be a smart aleck, but how do you know its running at 220? if the dash panel is set up like my 54 cub you should be able to put a temp gague in it, i did mine and i was glad i did. i find mine runs hot most of the time (except winter) but my radiator is shot

You do NOT have a thermostat, so that can be ruled out. Aside from a tight fanbelt, and a clogged system, you very well could have it ovefilled, and it is just spitting out the excess. As mentioned, a good read at farmallcub.com will help you alot.

Make sure the cooling system is clean and has the right amount of antifreeze in it. I don't know if a Cub has a water pump or if it is thermo-siphon, but IF it has a pump, be sure it is working. How long was the engine running before it overheated???

If radiator looks fairly new and overheats. The newer ones will do that. I have a cub that never ran hot. I even had to eliminate 50% of the cooling tubes because of leakage. It still never ran hot. I replaced radiator and the new flat, ribbon tu bes do not cool as well. If you do replace rad, make sure new one has round tubes about 3/8 inch inside, not ribbons like new cars. Cracked head, block, or gasket could allow combustion leak into water jacket and this would overheat and blow out coolant.

Pull the drain plug out use a coat hanger up threw the bottem and scrap years of dust which is now mud and reducing water supply.Don't stick coat hanger to far up in hole will damage raditor.Flush with water hose problum should be solved.
