More 856 PTO clutch ???'s....

I posted awhile back about a pto clutch seemed to slip when starting a 15' rotary mower. It was advised that I needed to rebuild the pto clutch so it had has a positive lock up and set the oil pressure at a certain level. My question is this, can the clutch be slipping at start up because there is a low oil pressure problem and the clutch isn't engaging correctly? I took a 1000 to 540 rpm adapter and used it to run a 6' mower at a reduced engine rpm (about 1200) and the 1000 seemed to slip a lot more than the 540 did. Would the lower engine speed change the oil pressure to the clutch too. If I rebuilt the pto clutch am I correct in thinking it will address both shafts? Thanks, Dan Swanson

The slower the engine runs the lower the clutch preasure, it runs off it's own little gear pump so it needs rpms to keep up the flow and preasure. These tractors are not new any more and the clearances arnt as tight as they were when new. Mike

Well FIRST , ya had best get a I T manual next go to your friendly Case I H store and buy the test fitting for the PTO unit then buy a GOOD hyd. pressure gauge that will read atleast 600 lbs . If the PTO unit has been slipped much then myself i would rebuild the clutch packs and here again one MUST read the book on how to do it OR you can have more problems. Since you want to run a BIG brush hog then i would install the HD. clutch pack as it has more disc's in it. And yes engine RPM has a lot to so with clutch pressure .
