my 1954 Alice CA quit running one day and can't get started again.have been having some kind of electrical problem,eg. battery does not charge up.Plugs look like close to original and dont know about points.have invested in books from Yesterdays Tractor but admit not much of a mechanic. Can anyone offer advice. Thanks in advance.

Doesn"t cost much to unhook the gas line to see if its getting gas. Pull a plug wire and place it so it isn"t grounding out but close to some iron to see if the old girl has some spark. Could also ask on the Allis board.

Three pieces of advice:

1. It's ALLIS, not Alice. Allis and Challmers are the last names of two of the founders of different parts of the company. A brief history can be found on Wikipedia.

2. There is a dedicated forum on this site for Allis Challmers tractors. You may want to post there for more brand-specific advice. This is the International Harvester forum, for all IH, Farmall, McCormick-Deering and McCormick tractors.

3. Fixing it: First, take the battery out and put it on a charger overnight. It could simply be that the battery is dead because the generator is not working. Running the tractor will drain the battery if the generator does not work. I had an old 12V on my Super H that wouldn't even give enough juice to make the plugs fire when we tried to tow-start it. Hooked up jumper cables from another tractor and it fired up the second I pulled the starter rod.

Al,
I had an uncle who always drove "Bur-ick" cars. He said the county should quit spreading limestone crushed rock on the roads because it just "evaporates" anyway. LA in WI

You will get a lot more responses from the Allis Chalmers forum. Have a safe trip to Delaware and email me that mag picture. Hal from MD

To get to the Allis Chalmers forum you need to click on "Another Forum" and select Allis Chalmers. Then scroll to the bottom of the first page and add your posting just like you did on the Farmall forum. Put your email address on there so you can be contacted. Send me your email address and I will post it on the Allis forum. Hal
