Farmall A steering box repair

Brother-in-law"s Farmall "A" has a serious leak from the steering box down by the wide front end. Looked at the repair manual, but can"t tell what parts come apart in what order. Don"t want to wreck anything trying to replace the seals, so thought I"d ask before getting heavy-handed.Thanks!

Fred: Put your wrenches away, there is a better way. These leaked from the time they were 5 years old, just poor design.

Drain the oil, put a grease zerk in the drain or fill to level plug and pump it full of grease. It will take close to 3 tubes. I have this on all three of my tractors, one of them has has grease in the steering box 25 years now. No more leaks, steers great even down to -30F. By pumping it full of grease, this insures any grease you add in future goes directly to worm, bearings and gear. I give mine a few shots of grease every time I grease the front end.

If you use "corn head" grease you will have great lubrication & no leaks. It is about the consistancy of GL-90 on a -30 winter day.
Any tractor dealer should have that product.
