H Performance Limit

I have an H with 3 point hitch on it. I have a set of forks that I use to move things around. So, I decided to pick up some stumps that I had lying adjacent to the strip of land I had just cleared. I wanted to move them to the other side.

So, the small ones I picked up and moved just great. Then, I snagged on to a larger one and hit the lift. The front end came off the ground.
So, I think, put those satchel weights back on there. So I added three more at 25# + each. and then back to the stump. I suck the forks under it and hit the lift. The front end did not come off the ground...but...the square tube that is part of the attachment on the rear axle ripped open--and that was that...No more lifting. I have spent 3 hours getting them off, closing up the tear and welding and reinstalling.

The moral of this story...when the front wheels come off the ground, do not add weights, you are already at or exceeding lifting limits. Stop...do something else!!!!

The principal of the hard knocks school is still laughing at me!

Pretty much stinks... but I think we all tend to "push the limit" in one way or another. I have an M I had spent a lot of time on over the previous winter to get it cleaned up to take tractor pulling. Got it tore down, put back together, painted up nice and put some new stuff on there.... only to find a long crack down the bellhousing. None of my area welders will touch it even though I've told them I know there are no guarantees... it's not a tractor I use or depend on... and a smarter man probably wouldn't do it... but I guess the world is fresh out of smarter folks... I'm going to hook her this weekend and if she snaps when I set the front end down (gently as possibly) I guess she'll just have to snap!

I can add to that, pulling a chisel plow in first gear - running it right to the limit on power - and broke a rear wheel. Sheared the key right off the hub and clamp, pretty well annihialated the wedge...

(quoted from post at 17:26:00 08/11/08) WOW, makes you wonder if it was shear force or if it had play or a crack first.

Charles

Part of it was the key part of the hub was partially rusted away - but the wedge part was like new (just replaced it last year!). So that's the second wedge I've broken, I put a better wheel on it this time so hopefully it won't happen again. But, I won't pull it that hard again either.

Here's the video I took before the carnage (pulling in 2nd gear in the vid):
