Help with the PTO shifter rod on an M

Hi All,

I'm working on a 1950 M that was in very rough shape. The rear end was missing several parts and one was the PTO shifter rod. The parts manual shows three different PTO assemblies.

Two have PTO shifter arms that are close to the transmission case so that the shifter rod is more or less straight, terminating in a loop that the driver would grab onto to engage the PTO. I don't have this PTO style on my tractor.

I have the third PTO type. It has a shifter leaver that is further from the transmission casting and has a PTO shifter rod that is longer and bent back so it can attach to the shifter rod leaver under the shield at its lower end, and terminates under the driver's seat with a 90 degree bend - not the loop.

I've tried to get the correct shifter rod from my favorite salvage yard but they've sent the wrong style - twice. I finally just bought the round stock to make my own, and am wondering if anyone has a picture and or a few critical dimensions that might help me get the pattern right.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

There are only 2 styles that I am familiar with, and both of those use the lever with the loop at the top, although the levers are not the same, and will not interchange. I've never seen a lever that did not have a loop. In any event, it sounds like you have the later style of PTO, which would be correct for a 1950, and the salvage yards should be full of those.

The MD we have has the 90 degree bend I'm pretty sure...unfortunately the tractor is 2 hours away from me, next time I'm out there, I'll sure take some measurements and pictures for you.

Thanks Chad,

I opened my email, so if you should find out anything, drop me a note - I would surely appreciate it

The correct police will never reach agreement on this. I have a 49 H, a 53 SMTA, and 53 SHII. The rods are different length, and right angle and loop.

I'm a short 5 10 inches, and didn't like the short rods, having to bend and squat, foot on the clutch, so I made up rods about 5 inches longer than OEM. Now nice and easy to grab that rod. Of course the SMTA has the nice lever.

Not the best of pics; rod is looped at the top behind the plumbing; 47 M with Saginaw/belly pump set-up. :)

For total eas and convienience an option was available to fasten to a platform bolt, and have a shifter lever style in/out control. The rear of the bellcrank on the lever moved the rod up and down. Our 48M had it. JimN
