super m steering question

I have a 1953 Super M with a narrow front end. The problem is if you turn the steering to far, the wheels will over steer to about 90 degrees. There is no stops on ether side to prevent this and if you turn it far enough, it will unthread from the worm gear and you have no steering at all because it is unhooked. Now I know your going to say who would be stupid enough to turn the wheels that far, well, I'll tell you. When the front wheels come up off the ground while trying to pull something, you are not able to see the direction the wheels are pointing and do not know how far to turn the steering wheel to compensate as there is very little drag on the steering wheel. It then becomes very easy to over steer. Is the tractor missing something or is that the way they are and I just have to live with it and be more careful. Any help would be great. Thanks, Tim

I believe you will find that one of the four bolts holding on the lower bolster is supposed to be longer than the other three and act as a steering stop. mike

id be willing to bet that either a bolt is missing or its in the wrong hole. look carefully at the tricycle front, directly above the wheel hubs. the tricycle front casting at the top bolts to the bottom of the steering bolster with 4 bolts. one of the bolts has a high crown top. that is the bolt that limits steering. i'd have to look tomorrow, but i think the bolt would be in the right side front hole if you are sitting on the tractor.

Tim - If you look on the underside of the bolster casting you've find a crescent-shaped slot cast into it. A special extended head on one of the 4 bolts that attach under lower bolster flange to the pivot shaft flange fits into the crescent. (If memory serves it's the right front corner...) The extended head on bolt in this slot limits pivot shaft rotation to a bit under 90 deg left and right of center.

My bet is a regular bolt has been used to replace the special extended head bolt in this position.

Wow you guys hit it right on the nose, all the bolts /nuts are the same . Guess will have to look for the right one at a tractor junk yard . Thanks again for all the help .TIM

tim, i just checked my superm , the bolt is on the rt front hole of the bolster, nuts go on the bottom, you need to turn the wheel to one spot to get the bolt up in there to drop in the hole. the bolt is still available from case i-h, it is called a steering stop bolt part number 48751da.
