Now that I've had the H out of the shop and test driving it I seem to have a transmission problem. The only thing I did relative to the transmission was to rebuild the shifter lever, and replced a broken LH bearing cage. I installed a used bearing cage from a salvage yard, and not knowing the tolerances involved I did not place the shim that was there with the original.

When I start the engine I hear a pretty good vibration/rattling about in the middle of the trans platform. It stops when I depress the clutch. I used 85-140 oil in the trans.

What parts of the trans are moving, at idle with the tractor in neutral? And what can I check without removing the platform?

With the engine running and transmission in neutral, the input shaft and countershaft are turning and the belly pump if so equipped. Push in the clutch and all that stops. You can check the input shaft bearings by removing the belly pump shaft cover and the belt pully housing. You'll be able reach up and wiggle them around. If it's the pilot you ought to be able to tell from the belt pull opening. If countershaft, you'll have to pop the lid.

I removed the belly pump cover, and then the coupling shaft from the forward pto shaft. I started it up and it was louder than before.

There is an "upper shaft" with a coupling in there also. I assume that is from the engine/clutch/to input trasnsmission. Is there some troubleshooting for that upper shaft?

Gordo, the bolts in that upper coupling might be loose. I've seen it happen. They need to be snug as a bug in a rug, and then just a little bit tighter. Also, the bolt that holds the yoke on the trans input shaft coupler could be loose. Either of those will cause a vibration in the clutch pedal.

Thanks RF. I'll check them out in the am. Sorry I installed that pto coupler now! But at least I know the drill in getting it back off.

BTW I replaced the seal on that pto shaft, and made a new flange gasket. .300WM case cut the holes. The seal that I got from NAPA, a TIMKEN, was less than half the thickness of the old IH leather seal, and was a "synthetic" material, and it was 12 bucks!
