I have one and look on here every few days, never see the 230's mentioned. Don't know anything about it other than it runs pretty good. Was told that they replaced the SC, is this correct. Haven't gotten around to restoring which was my intent, maybe someday. Just courios. H.B.

History lesson: C Farmall came out in 1948, replaced by Super C in 1951, replaced by 200 in 1954, replaced by 230 in 1956.
They are only trouble free if you maintain them.

HB: To add what Wayne said, close to 100,000 each of C and SC were built, 200 comes in around 12,000 units and 230 roughly 7,000. Shear numbers alone will show you 230 is not going to get mentioned too often on forums.

All tractors require maintainence and the 230 will be close to the same as C, SC, 200 and 240, plus not a lot different from SA, 100, 130 and 140. You should have an operator's manual to take care of all lubrication points. Anyone not familiar with these will neglect the fan hub and distributor drive gears. Two costly little items if left unattended.

All the old Farmalls are good tractors and usually won't give much for problems if you take good care of them and keep them maintained. Another reason you might not see many 230 discussions is because there were not a whole lot of 230's built.

"maintenance" and "tractor" go hand in hand but "free" and "tractor" I just cannot get my mind around. Based on what the guys are saying about size, that should be a nice little project. I bet there is a whole set of manuals out there somewhere with your name on them. Have fun with it!

I've got a '57 230 with FastHitch...got the C-20 plow, made a FH carry-all from the torn down deck of a Fast Hitch sickle mower, Fast Hitch blade, also got the WorkSaver 3pt arms with Pat's Easy Change on the ends...that way it does all the 3pt stuff as well...my 230 has the high altitude FireCrater pistons (I'm at about 250' above sea level, so it makes quite a bit of HP above your typical SC (I've got an SC and a key start 140 as well....I like Red....BobG in VA

Gentlemen, thanks for the feedback, didn't know they were so few made. Will keep playing with it. H.B.

Thanks for feedback, didn't know there were so few made. Guess I will keep playing with it. Do they have more horsepower than SC or is it the same engine. H.B.

would think the HP is about the same from the SC to 240? David...

HB: IH sold a lot of C and SC here in Canada, and by the mid 50s they started bringing in the British 250 and later 275, 35 hp tractors and you could buy them for less money than a 130 or a 230. This was driven somewhat from the competition from MF 35 and 135. Suddenly farmers were faced with the decission, "am I a diehard row cropper or will one of these 35 hp diesels with live pto do the job better."

Another factor to hit the small row crop tractors about the same time was chemical weed control. This reduced the need for small cultivator tractors.

Not sure this was quite the same in the US.
