Belt Pulley Oil

I have drained the oil out of the transmission the 39 M. Then I put diesel fuel in it and drove it around and drained that. Then I poured some diesel in the fill plug of the belt pulley and it ran out the bottom drain plug of the transmission. Is it still necessary to take the belt pulley loose to clean it out?
Thanks for input. Harley

I'd leave well enough alone if it were mine. If you remove the belt pulley assembly, you'll need a new gasket to re-install.

There is about a pint of oil in the pulley housing that never drains out. Just leave it unless the old oil was severly contaminated.
Be sure to drain the front of the transmission also. The drain plug is below the pulley area and is smaller than the rear drain plug.

The belt pulley unit holds about a pint of oil and does not go into the transmission. Use a fluid quart pump or something like that to get the oil out of the belt pulley box and refill with a pint of 80-90 gear lube.

You don"t have to remove the entire belt pulley assembly to get the diesel out, just remove the four bolts behind the hub that the pulley bolts to and pull the shaft out. You can then examine the gears and bearings and clean out all the gunk.
