Farmall M smoking when idling, using oil

I recently acquired a 1950 Farmall "M". It runs good but it seems to be using a little oil and will smoke a little, only when idling, now and then. I did a compression test and all the cylinders had from 100 to 110 lbs. and adding a little oil to the cylinders only brought up the compression by 10 lbs., max. The tractor had been sitting for the winter before I bought it. I have run it for quite a few hours since I"ve had it. At one point it was spitting a little oil out the muffler but has seemed to have stopped that. What could be the problem? Could it be valve seals? I had a friend recommend to me, to put some Marvel Mystery oil in the crankcase, and run it for a while. What do you think? I hope some of you Farmall guys can give me some advise! Thanks for any help!

What color smoke? If its only smoking at idle, carb might just need to be adjudted a little, and the oil you saw could have been condesation in the muffler.

I would NOT run straight Marvel mystery oil in the crankcase, but it would be O.K. to substitute one quart of engine oil for one quart of MMO or ATF. Doing so would probably not help very much though. The smoking at idle is most likely because of worn valve guides which need to be replaced. There are no valve seals unless someone has added them in an attempt to cure the worn guides. The fact that the compression raised by 10 pounds when you added oil to the cylinders tells me there is a piston ring problem also. Your engine is telling you that it is getting tired.

If it is only smoking at idle, I would look at a fuel adjustment, my M smokes a little at idle also, but it is a fuel problem, I need to adjust the carb a little. In my opinion, raising compression by only 10 pounds when oiling the cylinders is not a lot, considering with oil, you are completely sealing the cylinder against all blow by. I would think 100-110 pounds compression would be pretty good, I would be looking at guides if it is blue smoke.
