f 20 starter

I have been installing a Hiesler starter set on my 37 f20. When I bought the set up the ring gear was bad. Replaced the gear. Put a new farmall m gear on it. Then put all the parts on the tractor. The problem I have is the starter is hitting the fly wheel. It is about 3/4 of an inch too close. Is there supposed to a shim between the starter and the bellhousing?
Thanks Joe De Keyrel

JOE,
I have two F-20's with starters there is not a spacer on them. I have an extra starter motor I took off one in a junk yard it did not have a spacer on it either.
You may have the wrong starter motor for it? If you need me to I will measure the nose of my spare starter motor, Some noses are differant lengths.

BIG BORE 20, a measurement would help me alot.I made 5/8 spacer and some shims and it did work but the right starter would look better. Do you know what your starter came off of? I've been told it is off a chevy in the 1930,s. THANKS Joe

Hi,

My 1936 F20 has the Heisler starter kit on it, and the model/serial number of the starter is 714L/511469. As near as I could determine, this starter originally fit a 30-34 Chevrolet Car or truck. The generator used with the conversion is a 35 amp unit matched to a 48 Chevy 216.

No spacer is utilized between the starter and bell housing on my tractor.

Take care,

Scott in SC

Joe,
The casting # on the starter is HF161, From the end of the nose to the mounting flanges where it sets against the bell housing is 3 1/8". I owned a 1928 chevy 25yrs ago I think the starter off it was the same as a F-20. Also check out the starter for a 70 Hart Parr I have a 1936 it looks like it might work too. You may find one that fits, But will spin the engine over backwards. Watch which side of the flywheel the starter sets on (back side) or (front side) if you remove one off a junk tractor. This makes a differants in the direction it spins the motor.
I found that out on an H Farmall you could hand crank it and it would start, But hit the starter and it would not fire a lick. Found out the starter was spinning it backwards. The man had give me two starters for it the first one I tried was the wrong one.
Hope this helps!
