What is involved to replace the steering shaft u-joint on my 1951 M ? And where do I get one, it is the key way type, I didnt see it listed here or at oemtractor parts. Also looking for a shock absorber for the seat, struck out at NAPA.
Thanks

Here is a thought about removing the welded in U-joint. Grind down the weld as much as you can, torch the cross so that you can remove it, then you should be left with just the caps stuck in the yokes. You can then try pressing or cutting the caps out.

I didnt explain the problem properly, the cross and caps are what they welded together into a solid unit, nice huh?

Why not just try to find an entire salvaged U joint at a tractor parts salvage dealer. One I"m familiar with is J.P. Tractor Salvage in MO. (they have a web site.) You may still have to replace the bearings in it, but it may avoid a great deal of hassle. If the bores are damaged because of the weld, or you"re cutting it out, it may be near impossible to press in the new bearings. I just did my 240 steering and had to expand the U joints to get the new spiders in. I bought new spider bearings from IH for $16 each.

Yikes! How did they expect to steer the tractor! If the U-joint is not welded to the yokes, then is should be eaiser to remove than if it was welded to the yokes. If it was me, I would just torch the cross so that I ended up with the 4 pieces that are pressed into the yokes, then just knock the pieces out with a hammer and punch.

Should be able to find a whole used u-joint at wreckers. It wouldn't neccessarily have to be for an M.
That's sounds like one of those weld happy people that shouldn't be let close to a welder.
