Noisy Rear End

Anyone have any ideas how to quiet a noisy (whiny) rear end? Can a guy use straight Lucas in it?

*Note - This is not for an IH it is for a Massey Harris. I have gotten lots of helpful advice off this forum for my 450d and the MF forum doesn't seem as active. I did not think the brand would matter on this subject, just the application.

What lube is in the rear end? Light weight oils will make for a noisier gear train.
Try 85-140 or straignt 140 gear lube.

This is the stuff I was referring to, they do make an 85-140 as well, but I know Lucas is so darn good in the Trucks I naturally thought it would work great in this application as well.

Bananas, saw dust - old used car lot remedies. Yes, you can use straight Lucas. You can also use straight STP if you want. But, if it doesn't quiet down with regular 85w-140 gear lube, then you are just hiding symptoms. However, it is a "passive" problem - meaning it won't go away, but probably won't get any worse real fast either. In that case, ear plugs would work just as well as Lucas or STP. mike

Is the "noise" very bad? Or is it just a "whine"? It is normal for these old tractors to have some noise in the transmission, but if it sounds really really bad, then you should check out the inside of the transmission and fix the problem.
