What to look for first (240 Utility)

Have a great little 240, but, the hydraulics just quit. What would you guys recomend? Don't know much about these.

Check the oil level, but don't bother changing it until after you determine the extent of the damage. If the oil is so bad that it caused the system to quit, the pump is shot. If the oil level is so low that the pump ran dry, the pump is shot.

Pretty much a given, the pump is shot. There isn't much to the 240 hydraulic system... A pump, two tubes, a bank of valves, and a small reservoir.

Do you recall if the system sounded like it was straining? I had a 240, most likely a plugged screen in the system and the pump was so hot and it was ruined, spit on it and it just sizzled SO, don't grab hold of the pump.

Of course, check the hydraulic oil level first. But if the system has been working all along, it"s likely that something has happened within the system. Sure, it"s interesting to know that mechanically it"s a relatively simple system, but where does that get you? Troubleshooting takes some knowledge of how it works. The best thing you can do is to find an IH Blue Ribbon Manual GSS-1278 . . . they"re available on eBay all the time.

I"d begin by checking the system filter screen to see if it is clogged. It"s on the right side of the tractor under a plate attached by 4 bolts. Next I"d go to the Oldoakfarmalls.com site, and read the excellent article on hydraulics. It"s about a 460, but the system is the same as on the 240. There"s a screen and orifice within the pressure regulator, and you may have contination and blockage there. But before I began tearing the hydraulic valves apart, I"d make sure I had GSS-1278 to know what I was dealing with.
