IH 709 tractor hydraulics?

Just wondering if this tractor is supposed to have down pressure on the hydraulics?

We hooked up a 3 bottom ih quick connect plow today and couldnt get it to dig down for some reason. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Not sure if any farms tractors have" down pressure", not even newer ones. 706 definately does not.

Reasons for plow not going in:

1. Ground too hard

2. Plow shears really dull

3. "Suck" not adjusted right ( get an owners manual cause I am not real good at remembering how this is adjusted, but there is an adjustment on IH plows.

That should about sum it up.

Good luck,, Gene

Do'nt need down pressure on a plow.
Get a manual
Points probably wore out
Ground very hard and dry, wait for a rain to soften it up a bit.Mark

The points were supposedly just replaced but
I am not sure if they are the correct
ones though. The one plow was digging
in a bit and the others were riding on the
surface.

We hooked up our other 2 bottom plow
3 pt hitch, and it dug right in so the
ground isnt too hard.

we couldnt really find any adjustments
other then another set of bolt holes on one
side that the frame might be able to mount
to a couple inches lower.

That isn't how it works.

The plow should try to dig itself to China and the tractor should have to hold it back out of the ground.

"Forcing" a plow in the ground is a good way to bust something.

So, like the other guys say, if it won't go in the ground, the problem is either with the plow, with the soil or the way the plow is set up.

Look at the points. It's easy to tell. If they look all rounded, they're worn out.

If the points were recently replaced, the bolt heads should not be worn smooth yet.

Plows suck themselves into the ground. In fact, they normally have so much down force that the tractor pulls UP on the plow to gain extra traction. That's what the DRAFT lever is for on your 706.

The points are worn out, or you have the wrong kind of points for your soil type.

One more thing, there is an adjustment that controls the amount of "suck" If you look on the landslide, there is a small raised area with an arrow on it. I cant remember what you have to loosen to adjust this part, but the more you point the arrow down, the more agressive the shears become. get down on your knees and look, you might have to scrape the dirt off, but that adjustment is there. At least is is on the IH semi mounted plows from the 70's era/.
