magneto woes..... update

Well, I've considered everyone's advice, and have ordered the complete kit from yt. $103 and change, gets me a new cap, gaskets, coil, condensor, points, rotor, gear, etc. If that DOESN'T solve the problem, well, I guess I'll send it to someone who knows more about mags than me... which could be about anyone... Thanks for all the advice, and in 3 to 5 days, when I get the parts, I'll post again and let you know what happened.

When you remove the old coil from it's laminated cylindrical core, BE CAREFUL, as the core is easy to distort (ruin), and, often, the old coil will be tightly stuck to the core. Better to carefully CUT the old coil off of the core than to ruin the core trying to remove the old coil.

I wish you luck, I have used aftermarket ignition parts and have not had luck with them, not that you will, but, beware, kinda like the aftermarket regulators you were referring to a day or so.

if you get stuck and cant fix it, get in touch with magman, he posts here now and then or you can get him on nebraskacowman.com or go to his website, www.farmallmagneto.com

I highly recommend Magman. He rebuilt the H-4 for my M and it works great. I had it back in about 10 days from time I shipped it to him. Also, I felt his price was reasonable.

would using a press be a safe way to do it? I know beating it is bad juju...the thought of cutting the coil off sounds like a pain, although still preferable to ruining the core.

Yup, sure about that. The tractor does run well after it starts.. its just very difficult to start for some reason. (only on the mag... on the dist/coil it pops off after about one revolution,if that) The spark is evidently not as strong as it should be, from the tower which can only be worse out of the cap. I thought it looked like a decent spark, but have learned that it should have been much stronger to be up to spec.

Are you running hi-dome pistons? I built an engine with a realy hi-dome piston and it would not start hardly at all. So i installed a dist and it fired rite off. A retired I-H mech said there was a buletin from them saying when installing the FIRE CRATER kits you needed to install a dist so i went with a dist. Now a shorter dome will start with a mag. Last few yrs have bought and sold some with shorter domes and they will start with mags. These are A,B and C,SC that i have had the experiences with and im talking probably 15 tractors.

I thought I had one pretty well supported in the press, and mangled the laminated core. After that, if they are stuck from the old varnish and tar, I cut them off.

I have worked on mags and never really thought about a lot of stuff, but I wonder, but can't remember would there be any little jumpers or grounding straps that could be lost. Like from moveable parts. Can't even right now visualize what is inside. Just wondered. Seems like on one I had to solder a wire inside for something.

Sometimes the wire that runs from the points back to the coil will have chafed through where it goes through that narrow passage.
