Noise in Hydraulic IH 686

I did a post earlier about the noise in the hydraulics. Most responded by saying to change the filter and refill with fluid. I waited for the manuals to arrive before I changed the filter. I changed the filter and refilled with fluid. But I still have a lot of noise. I've found that if I let the tractor be on a fast idle before moving anything such as the steering or 3 pt hitch and wait for the system to build pressure the system is a little quieter. But when I bring the tractor to idle the excessive noise will appear again. Buy putting my hand on the line to the power steering from the left side of the tractor I can feel vibrations. Also the noise sounds like a bad bearing. Before I bought the tractor the owner and I run it in his field with a bush hog attached and he demonstrated the use of the 3 pt - raise and lower - feather and pto - all seem to work well. I talked with a person at the IH dealership and he said all those tractors would leak pressure down overnight. Any help would be appreciated - James

Any air leak on the suction side will create the noise you are talking about. Try over filling the Hydraulic system and see if the noise disapears.

Over fill by 5 gallons and post back with the results. While you are at it, make a dipstick to check the level from the fill plug with your oil level even with the side plug out. Mark it again at 5 gallons over. Then hopefuly you won't have to take that side plug out again.

I don't know where the oil level plug is. I have a dipstick on top the transmission with marks that tell me when its and how much to add. Also I tend to agree with the last post about the pump sucking air. When I first start the tractor all is quiet for awhile and the sounds begin. I will add a couple of gallons and see what happens. Also the drain plug under and the other just back of it about 10 or so inches is froze and I can't get them out. Any suggestions? James

Does the oil get foamy after running a little while? If I remember correctly those tractors used a hose between the upper hydraulic reservoir where the lift cylinder is located and the oil pickup tube for the filter. If that hose fails it can allow air to enter the filter and will cause noise.

I went out this afternoon and added 3 more gallons - 1 gallon at a time. Now the unit is a lot quieter - I don't know what to make of that. It seems there would have to be a be a leak at the pump to let it start sucking air after the tractor runs a bit. I don't know if it is a good idea to have all the extra fluid in the housing.I don't know what is around the pump in the belly of the tractor. I wouldn't think that IH would build something with a dipstick well marked on how much fluid to add. Is it possible to have a leaking gasket in the pump or something else to let the pump suck air after fluid is drawn down after startup. If anyone else has any ideas let me know. - James
