484 question

I looked at a 484 recently for sale. 2044 hours and repainted. Anybody here had one for a while that can tell me about the good and bad of them??? His price seems high, but it would sure depend on serviceability and durability to me. How many horses on that model? Diesel only?

I bought a 484 with over 13,000hrs on it. I bought it with a engine knock and rebuilt the engine over the winter, it had a spun rod bearing. Im planning on painting soon but now I found a brake leak.

The 484 was designed to be 48hp but they all came out between 50 and 55hp. Thats what I read anyways.

The guy I bought mine from knew somone who had a 484 with duel rear wheels and they pulled a 4 bottom plow with and 10ft disk. He said they ran the tractor hard all day everyday and it held up. I really like mine, seems to be built well.

Some parts can be a pain to find, that about the only problem I see with them. What I like is they have really good hydraulics.

I bought a 484 new in 1981. Still have it and it has been a great little tractor. We use it to mow hay, rake hay, pull a 8 foot disk, bale hay and just all kinds of things.

The 484 is rated at 42 HP. I have never seen anything from IH claiming to be 48 or 50 HP. My 584, also bought new in 1980 is rated at 52 HP with a 4 cylinder engine. Still running it as well.

Hi Russ at 2044 Hrs it is hardly broken in. My brother still has 454 (older model of 484) that we bought in 1972 with over 15,000 Hrs, still starts and runs great. We put on 16.9 x 28 rear tires, fluid and weights and had the pump turned up so that it was putting out over 50HP but with no surprise, the second year we had it had to put a HD clutch from 674 in it. We pulled a 10ft IH disk, 3x14 plow, baler with thrower and 1 row IH#16 forage harvester. Later my brother also purchased the newer model 495 but the 454 will out pull it any day.

The weak point of these tractors are the hydraulic brakes, the seals in the wheel cylinders leak after many years and air gets in the braking system. The other problem is if someone leaves the parking brake on and drives the tractor. The chewed up parking brake band bits get into the hydraulic system and cause MCV valve problems.

Use 15W-40 Diesel engine oil and add some conditioner or couple of table spoons of engine oil to the Diesel tank every time you fill up. This will help lube the front lip seal on the fuel injection pump as the new low sulphur fuel does not have the required lubricity for the older injection pumps.

All around good 40HP utility tractor.

My grandpa bought one of the 454 diesel's new the year I started first grade. Can remember scaring him and grandma out of their wits when I figured out how to start it that summer.

He bought a second one used with a 1550 loader about the time I started high school.

Can remember spending many a summer on them cutting, rakeing and/or baling hay. And a pretty good bit of time cleaning chicken houses and spreading compost. Can't remember any problems with either of them in the 18 years I was around them (other than busting a hydralic line on the loader).

My dad bought a 484 the same year I graduated high school... never knew him to have a problem with it. Somewhat larger physically than the 454 grandpa had but same basic tractor.

In short I've always thought both the 454s and 484s were good tractors... and wish I had either.

Hi Russ, i used to sell the 454 & 484 tractors here in the UK. They were made just up the road
from us at Doncaster here in the UK. Very good reliable tractors and we sold a lot of them taking mostly MF tractors in part exchange. MJ

Thanks to all who responded. Seems to be a good size utility tractor and diesel. My 350 utility needs a break. I may have to try and deal on this one.

Russ, Im just curious, what are they asking for this 484?

I payed $1000 for mine but had to rebuild the engine and it was pretty beat up.
