Farmall H countershaft assembly won't fit :(

Ok, this is the latest installment on me updating the PTO shaft in this thing. I have a 24000 serial #, but a '39, or old style dog pto engagement. I think someone swapped out the front end of this tractor with a newer one, which would explain the '39 style pto.

I have since got a new and improved version of the pto, but it needs a different countershaft. I've got all the shafts and bearings out of it, and I had the gears pressed off the old, and onto the new. I attempted to drop it in, but it doesn't get past the oil gutters on the top. I'm guessing that this is a "old style" casting and that's why the new shaft doesn't fit. Dimension wise, they are the same (gear area), except for the spline end is bigger compared to the dog style end.

Can I grind some of the oil gutter? will that be enough? anyone ever have this unfortunate experience?

Please help. You can email me directly at [email protected]. I'm in Pennsylvania. Any H'ers out there?

I had the same problem on 1940 H whenI wanted to upgrade to the newer style PTO. The old shaft is shorter. If I remember correctly I finnaly was able to take the constant mesh gear off, put the shaft in and then put the gear on with the shaft in place. I have done the same thing on a newer H and had no proglem. There has to be a way because many old Hs were upgraded to the newer style PTo.

How did you get the gear back on the countershaft while in place? I had my buddy press the stuff on, so I don't know how much force is necessary to put it on. Did you use some sort of hydraulics? a big ol hammer? I thought of that metheod, but I thought putting the gear back on while in place would be nearly impossible.
