better puller SC or H

I"ve got some logs I need to skid out of my back woods to cut up for firewood. The hill I need to come up over is too much for my SA. I need something w/ more power. Locally, I have found a wide front H & a narrow front SC. Both tractors are junks, both run, but they are just old work tractors. Both smoke a little, both are rusty, both have old dry cracked tires. I can buy either one for about $1,000. Which is the better puller?

HRJ: While the SC may show close to same hp as an H, when it comes to skidding logs chassis weight is what counts. No question, the H will be the best skidding those logs

H is heavier, has larger tires, and has frame rails unlike a super c witch uses the engine as the frame, c's belong in a field not the woods.

Why not just cut the logs shorter instead of getting another. The firewood will be expensive if you have to get another tractor.

It's an excuse to get another tractor don't you know!!! Probably easier to pull the logs out then get a trailer in there anway.

I vote for the H.

I would buy the H, it is a lot heavier, and the WFE makes it a lot more stable if you have any hills and such to navigate.

Sorry i forgot that is was an excuse for another tractor. I still would cut the logs shorter that way you can spend more time in the timber.

I vote the H as well. The SC has the same basic engine as the tractor you have. the difference in HP is just a few. The advantage of the SC would be tire size, and a bit of wt. There is not much stability difference between narrow fronts, and wide fronts unless the wide front has springs or heavy shocks attached to the front axle. The pivot point for the axle provides a similar rollover axis as the wheels on a narrow front. JimN

I agree the H would be better, both for weight and the added strength of the frame rails.

I don't know how much twitchin' and skiddin' of logs you've done, so I'll just caution you not to hitch them to anything but your drawbar. Even you're using an arch, there's not too many things that will stop a tractor any faster than the nose-butt of a log fetchin' up or diggin' into the ground. If it's hitched to anything but the drawbar when that happens, she'll climb her gears and flip in less than a heartbeat.

Be careful.

The H would have more power, so buy the H. An H with a wide front is a little hard to come by, especially if it has the IH wide front. The H and Super C are both very good tractors, but the H will have more power.
