I was cleaning a super h with a steam cleaner so I could check for oil leaks and a spot on the clutch housing about three inches long had been welded and finished very nice. Looked inside and could not find a trace of a crack or break. The guy and his dad I bought it from had it since it was new and said nothing had ever happened to it. Just wondering if anybody knew if maybe IH repaired sand imperfections in castings then and used them.

I have a 1929 Regular with what looks to be a factory welded counter shaft housing. Either welded, or some one did some fixing on the sand cast, but looks like welding. There is no evidence of damage.

The repair was probaly done on the foundry pattern. If you look the castings over you will find flat head screws in the castings as well.

The patterns and core boxes were wood and were always breaking so the repairs show up in the castings. [ screws, glue lines, wood filler, etc ]

My Super M block has what yours has but it turned out to be in the foundry pattern.
