A guy offered to give me a 4 cylinder international gas engine. Im pretty sure it is some type of tractor engine. Is there anyway I can find out what model it is or what it fits? The code on the side was 397874R1. Any help is appriciated Thanks

Atvman: I gather that number is cast into block? It is a part number. If it's newer than 1955 it should have cubic inches cast in block as well. In the case of a 4 cylinder gasser it will be C- followed by 3 numbers. C stands for carburated and numbers are the cubic inches.

It will also have casting a date code day and month by number and year by letter, with what looks like a round head blade type screw cast between each of day, month and year. Come back with that letter and numbers, then we can date the engine.

Just under number one spark plug it should have tractor model number and engine serial number. this is on a machined flat surface and those letters and numbers are stamped in place, about 5/16" high digits.
