Cutout or Regulator

When I found our 48 Super A it was missing the cutout/regulator. Now that I've restored the tractor I would like to get the electrical system working again.

I've read in past posts that a 48 SA should have a cutout, but that I should check the generator # just to be sure. The engine is not orginial, so it could be a newer generator. Where can I check the generator # (1101423 J28) to find out?

Thanks,
Greg

I'd think the first consideration is whether the tractor has a three- or four-position light switch. With the four-position, a cutout is what you need, since the voltage is regulated manually by selecting the Low or High charge positions of the switch (the Low position switches a resistor into the chage circuit). A three-position switch doesn't have that resistor and controls only the lights, so you would need a regulator in that case.

Not ashamed to say that I still learn something or other most days, and I'm not sure what difference there would be with a newer generator, so I'll be watching to see what that distinction might be.

Thanks Scotty, I'll look and see what I have for a light switch. This is my first adventure into Farmall charging systems, it will be a vertical learning curve.

Regardless of what it was originally, I would put a voltage reg on it instead of the cutout. Much better for the battery and the LO/HI charge is one less thing to worry about on an old tractor.

If it has a bracket underneath the mount for the gen it would be a Reg. If the gen has holes on top of the gen it would have been a cut-out as lots of the As and Cs in 48 had either one. You cant get a new cutout original. When getting the reg for your gen get the reg for that gen and follow the instructions that come with a new reg. You can get them from www.nnalert.com.
