Brakes uneven on 484.

On my 484 the brakes dont work right. Both brakes work but the right pedal needs to go like 3" farther then the left pedal. So its impossible to press both brakes at the same time. This had new brakes put on about 1 1/2 years ago before I bought it. These are hydraulic brakes and are supposed to equilize themselves. Anyone know how to fix this?

They are a bit tricky. You may have a leak in the system somewhere. If so it requires removing axle housings to fix. Could also be a bad equalizing valve. Hard to tell. These brakes are as good as any, but a pain to work on at times.

Ive heard the brakes are a mess when you have trouble with them. They guy who owned the tractor ab put the brakes on didnt take good care of it.

Michael, if the brakes were repaired properly, when pressed individually they should only go down about 1 1/2" and they should be equal. If the one goes way down more than the other and feels spongy then try bleeding that side, otherwise look for leaks in the lines from under the dash and under the transmission cover.

The left brake goes abot 1 1/2", the right side goes abot 4".

On my dads JD he had the pedal lock flipped over to of the right brake so it was dragging and burned it up. The left brake is OK but if you push both pedals they both go to the floor.

How do you bleed the brakes on the IH? I seen the bleeder screws today when I power washed it.

Michael, tools required, 3/8" or 7/16" socket, 2 lengths of about 2 to 3Ft of clear plastic tubing that will fit on bleed screw nipple and a clean hydraulic fluid container.
Method, run tractor until hydraulic fluid is up to temperature, park on level surface, lock parking brake and block rear wheels, with tractor running at low idle open bleed screws on top of axles and connect clear plastic tubing to bleed screw and put other end into clean container, rest container on top of drawbar, speed tractor to fast idle (1500 RPM) and let hydraulic fluid flow thru clear tubing until there are no air bubbles, then close bleed screw.
DO NOT PUMP BRAKES. Top up hydraulic fluid reservoir with fluid from container. If brakes are really bad then may have to repeat in a day or so to get all the air out.

Thanks jim, I'll give it a try tomorrow. I have a broken collar bone so all I do all day is mope around the yard. I even have a piece of clear tubing laying in the barn.

Also check to make sure the brake line isn't bent, it should all run up hill and then back down without low spots to cause line to get any air trapped in it. Also check the little inline screens to make sure they are not plugged. If your tubing is long enough just run it right into the fill hole at back of tractor. You can do 1 side at a time....James
