Super A Hood

My Super a needs a grille so I bought one while in north Texas that the man assured me would fit my tractor , serial # 272727. It is longer than the original so I still need a grille. What year did the grilles chang size?

25001 TO 355669 the cnh site doesent really say what year they changed in but did state 25001 TO 355669 used one grill and 355670 and up used another hope this helps some terry t

Up to 25,000 the grille dimesions were the same s the rest of the run, except that those earliest ones used the Dzus fasteners instead of bolts to hold the grille on. The rest of the run, it was the same grilles for most of the Super As and As.

356000 and up were Super A-1s, and had the 123 for a motor isntead of the 113. Someone like Hugh might jump in and correct me, which is fine, but I'm wonderin' if, in going to the 123, they didn't also go to the taller radiator and thus the taller grille.

That's one of the distinctions between a C (113)and a SuperC (123, with a taller radiator and grille), and I'm guessing the same thing happened between the A/SuperA and the SuperA-1.

If not, you just may have been sent a grille from a SuperC.

The taller (Super C sized) radiator and grille were used on the Super A-1.

I think the fastener change was more in the range of 40,000 or 41,000, not 25,000.

You should also be aware of the difference at the bottom. Each is cut to fit the front bolster of the specific model. A and Super A use one, while the B and C use another.

The A and B had a "FARMALL" front emblem while the Super A and C had the "IH". So if you cross that boundry the screw holes will be in the wrong place.

Your topic says "hood" but then you talk about grills. So you need both?

OEM lists four kinds of hoods for a SA.

Distillate hood 25 1/2" long

Gas hood 25 1/2" long

Distillate hood 26 11/16" long (dzeus fittings)

Gas hood 26 11/16" long (123 engine) This is will fit the A-1 made in 1954

Your SA was made in 1949

Grills are hard to find. Where you located in Texas?

Super A- Tex. Senior moment on the hood. I need a grille for this tractor. I have a grille that will not fit. I live in Elkhart, Tx. on US287

Don: To start with Hugh isn't going to correct anyone. Super A grill and hood never changed until serial number 356001 in 1954, except for that distillate hood Randy mentions, and it would have a 4th hole for small gas tank. I think the culpert in this case is the guy who sold you the hood, just might be from a Super C or a Super A1.

Numbered series tractors hoods would not have the v groove along the side, curling up over model badge.

Hugh -- regarding being corrected -- I don't mind it at all when my advice or information is wrong, and I hope I didn't offend you. I tossed your name out as a more reliable referencce than me as I felt I was out on a bit of a limb speculating on the notion of whether the SA-1 hood was taller than the SA (as in the C/SC distinction), and knew that you were one of the guys that would have that question sewed up tight.

Sort of on the same subject, do I recall correctly that some of the last of the SAs, before the SA-1s, got 123s? Just wondering if those tractors got the shorter or the taller radiator, thermostat and water pump . . .

Scotty: I wasn't about to argue, as you and Jim were correct in my books. The C-123 grills are higher however the fore to aft length of grill is not much different from C-113 grills. A Super A grill is close to flush with tyrods, whereas the SA1, 100 and 130 grills protrude two inches past tyrods, thus the hood has to be longer.

I expect you'll find same difference between C and SC, 200 or 230. I think the guy sold him a SC or SA1 grill.
