hay wagon or hayrack help needed

I'm building a horse or tractor drawn haywagon (or hayrack as we called 'em). It'll really be used primarily as a people hauler for hay rides. It is 7' wide and 12' long. The top of my sides will be 36". Any advice on how tall to make the corners/fronts backs? Thanks

36" is code for stair and porch railings most places isn't it? Sounds like a good height for keeping people in.

To make it look like a hay rack 6' or 7' in the back. Make the front the same as the sides, or just put your seat up there.

Consider brakes for the wagon.

The loose hay wagons we used at the ranch had both front and back racks about 6 feet high with a center 2X 6 or 8 running on up about 2 to 3 more feet. Of course, on those there were no sides. Used the same for small bales also.

I restored an old (60's I think) hay wagon with sears running gear and made it 8 X 12. The running gear could be extended to make a 16 foot wagon. I don have high sides, just an 8 inch board around the sides. I pull it with kids and parents in parades and at Christmas a friend has a christmas display that cover 150 acres and has a 1 1/2 mile road aroubd it. I pull it with a farmall M and he pulls it with an open jeep. As many as 20 people at a time. up and down the hills here in SW NC with noproblems. Last year he says more than 650 people took the ride in a week. can be pulled by horse also. Nuff said Henry

Forgot. Decided against higher sides to keep people from standing up. could unbalance waon if several people stood at a railing Also discourages people from hanging legs over the side. Nuff said Henry

Thanks! Six feet will be the front and back heights (with a slant brace from the top corners of the front and back to about a third of the way on the sides).

Thanks for the advice. Wish I could figure out how to post a picture on this site.

And, don't worry, I've got four wheel hydraulic brakes on it and they can be used together or the front and/or back separately.

Don't make the deck any wider than the width of the wheels. Will keep the thing from becoming top heavy on one side, thus rolling, if everyone does shift to one side.

Most wagon accidents involve people falling off the front & getting run over.
