a dumber question

For all the guys out there that dont like dumb questions or poor spelling------go read a book till someone answers my question. I had to lay off working on my M----messed up my back. So I thought I'd go fishing-----I have 4 old outboard motors, all worked good when last used----average lay up time 4 years. None of them will start, not fuel problem, one has weak spark other3 have no spark. As these units have magnetos and points I thought someone out there might know what goes to hell just sitting around for a few years. Newest motor is a 1972 oldest is 1946, all started and ran good when last used.
Thanks Bob S.

Hi Bob, usual problem is rust on the coil armature poles at the gap between flywheel & coil. Most outboard motors of the 1972 vintage you had to pull flywheel to access points, condenser & coil. Take some fine grit sandpaper and clean coil poles and give points a wipe as well.

Hi If you havn't already done it,this is worth a try. Take out the spark plug, pour some petrol(gas) into the cylinder,not too much, put the spark plug back in and try again good luck.MTF

Hi
I got one running, took longer to get the flywheel off than anything else, I'm suprised it started as the points are black but I cleaned them up and it started right up. Did you ever think that people that can afford to run out and buy new stuff all the time never know the feeling of sticking out their chest and saying "yup I can fix anything". (even if we are lieing to ourselfs, it still feels good}
Thanks
Bob S.

Hey I just read the question again, so I guess my solution of putting fuel in the plug hole was a bit 'pointless'. So there you go, sometimes its just plain dumb answers. MTF
