farmall H stahls after 3 minutes

Hi, my 1939 H with rebuilt carburator, new distributor cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs ,inline fuel filter, starts right up, but exactly 3minutes later it starts running rough and stahls out. It doesn't matter if you have it on slow idle or fast throtle. It stahls after 3 minutes. Funny thing is that it will start right up again. But stahls out after 3 minutes. It can still pull a neighbors truck out of a ditch, as long as it does not run more that 3 minutes, please, can someone suggest what might be going on? Thanks, Rich

First, get rid of that in-line fuel filter. If the screen is in place in the sediment bowl, as well as the screen in the fuel inlet fitting in the carb, there is no need for any additional filtering. Second, are you using the proper vented fuel cap? Is it working?

Hi, thanks for the help, I took off the sediment bowl because it was leaking badly. It is a modern vented fuel cap. I will try running it today with the fuel cap off.

My 1939 farmall H ran about 45 minutes before it stalled today. It was about half throtle, the oil pressure started at 40 PSI then dropped to 20 PSI and then it started to run unevenly and when it stalled out it was probably about 5 PSI. I ran it with the cap off the gas tank. With that pressure dropping like that when it gets hot.....what does that mean mechanically?
Funny thing is, I was field mowing with a 6 foot wide dixie cutter brush hog for at least an hour several weeks ago with no problem!!! I hope someone can give me some things to check.
thank you for your time...Rich

You need to check the gas flow to the carburetor.
Unhook the gas line at the carb and see if there's a full stream of gas, no trickle. Hold a clean container to catch the gas. I would remove that in line filter if its not for a gravity flow system. If there's a full stream from the gas line remove that tube fitting from the carb and clean the screen behind the fitting. Have you opened the main jet adjustment screw near the bottom of the carb? This is where your engine gets the enriched fuel mixture. Hal
PS: You need to check the timing to make sure its not retarded. Make sure there's no blockage in the radiator if its running hot. Need to find the cause before you crack your cylinder head or worse.

Hi, thanks for the info, the timing is a little advanced, it was the only spot to get the engine to run smooth, I guess the timing chain is really worn. But it starts right up without any problem. The tube screen in the carb has been missing for years. The sediment bowl was leaking gas badly so I replaced it with an elbow and put on 8mm inside diameter fuel line, besides putting on a fuel filter and shut off valve. Is there an easy fix if the oil pressure drops to 5 PSI after it runs for 45 minutes? Thanks, Rich
