Oil Leak in the underbelly of an H.

OK guys it'll be pretty clear (pretty quickly)that this is my first restoration job. I'm working on a '42 H. Sorry if I don't use all the correct terms - here goes. There are two plates on the bottom of the chassis; one allows me to look at the clutch (I think), the other allows me to see both the drive train (high up, while laying on my back) and the hydraulic shaft (lower down). What I think is the hydraulic shaft has a couplings on either end held with cotter pins. I've got oil leaking what I think is a seal where this shaft enters the rear-end of the tractor. My question is, can I replace this seal without splitting the tractor ... and if so, how do I go about it? Thanks and remember - I'm a beginner.

You can replace without splitting the tractor. Pull the cotter pins and slide the collars back, the hydraulic pump drive shaft will come out. Unscrew the coupler off the rear shaft. Remove the seal flange (3 bolts). Put the new seal in and put it all back together. Napa can get you the seal you need for about $8.00.

Yes you can replace that seal. Remove the two cotter pins and slide the sleeves. The shaft will come out easily. Remove the bolt that holds the coupler on the transmision side. Standard, right thread. Once you slide the coupler off you can unbolt the housing the seal is in. The other shaft (from the clutch) has a seal also (on the transmision side). I'm sure it is leaking as well. This flange can be unbolted also but it's really tight. Both of these seals will need to be replaced. Good luck.

Thanks Favor for the reply.
What about the seals for the drive train above this hydraulic shaft? I took a good look this morning and it looks as though this one is leaking on the transmission side. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of room to work way up there. Removing those couplers seems like a knuckle cruncher let alone removing the seals. What say you?
