Cub radiator removal

Please, someone tell me how to remove the radiator from my January 1949 Cub. I see perhaps sixteen bolts at the base of the radiator connecting to the front end housing. Must all of them be removed to remove the radiator? I want/need to take the radiator to a local shop for testing/repair/ recore etc.

I removed the hood/gas tank yesterday and took it to the local shop to be cleaned and lined. Safer than me doing it. The guy has more than 25 years experience. I avoid being blown up or poisoned. It costs just three times what it would cost me to do it myself, unless I were to need to go to a hospital for repair. It is worth paying the expert.

The carburetor is refurbished and clean as can be. It is back on the Cub. Air cleaner comes off next for refurbish. The wiring harness appears to be original as does the generator and the voltage regulator. Wiring is exposed in some parts.

I have ability to pressure wash the tractor. Any cautions to avoid creating problems if pressure washing??

Yes, you will have to remove all the bolts that connect the casting to the radiator core, the casting is the lower radiator tank. Be careful with the pressure washer around the radiator, if its "tender", the pressure washer could wash holes in it, I'd think about not pressure washing until the radiator is at the shop. Good luck on getting all those bolts out with out twisting a few off. Start by soaking them with lots of penetrating oil for a couple of days (several times a day) before you try to take them out. As for the wiring, I re-wired mine, but did it one wire at a time. (I was too tight to buy a kit & didn't care about keeping it original.) I ran a separate ground wire for each light and ran them back to ground at the same location as the battery is grounded to the chasis. 6V is plenty of voltage for a Cub, but 6V does NOT conduct through rust as well as 12V will, hense the ground wire. Good luck, I just love my Cub. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

I agree let it soak with oil before removing bolts. Take the metal part out of a windshield washer blade and rod out the radiator yourself the blade will fit perfect with the water hose stuck in the top water should come out of every spout <that how i do it,thats my 2 cents worth

The Cub is an UNpressurized system. No pressure in the system at all. Don't get the radiator pressure tested, just cleaned.

Thanks to each of you. I was going to borrow a pressure pump and test the pressure myself. Now I will not.
The fellow at the radiator shop estimated as much as $300 to remove and clean the radiator and re-core it. I can buy a new one for just over half that.
I think I will just remove it and rod it myself. Worst case is I need to buy a new one. I am wondering whether there is a leak because I do not see fluid when I look in the top of the radiator. It is probably worth filling it with half water and half antifreeze to see what happens - or... just put water in it and drain it after a while if there are no obvious leaks. Any thoughts on this plan??
